Introduction

You are working at a brand new local high school. The athletic director can't find anyone to work as the head volleyball coach. Wanting to make a good impression you agree to take the job. The problem is that you don't know very much about volleyball. This webquest is designed to help you learn as much as possible about volleyball and to help you become a successful coach.

Task

Your task is to use electronic and print resources to develop a volleyball handbook. Use Microsoft Word to create your handbook. Each guidebook should include a title page and table of contents. Split your book into three parts: a) Rules b) Basic Skills and c) Team Play and Organization. Use the following “focus questions” as a guide for writing each section:

Rules
a. What organization governs high school volleyball rules?
b. What are the legal dimensions of a volleyball court and how high is the net supposed to be?
c. What are the rules about serving the volleyball?
d. How do you score points in volleyball?
e. How many times may each team contact the ball on each side?
f. What is a sideout?
g. What are the most common rules violations that occur in volleyball?

Basic Skills
a. What are the most basic skills needed to play volleyball? You should include at least five.
b. What are the steps for performing each skill?
c. What is the main point for performing each skill?
d. What are some drills and practice routines that can help you learn each skill? Include two for each skill.

Team Play and Organization
a. How many players are on the court at once?
b. What are the main positions on the court?
c. What is the role of the libero?
d. What is rotation?
e. What is the attack line?
f. What are some drills that an entire team can perform to practice with?
g. What are some drills to improve team fitness that are specific to volleyball?

Learning Advice

Organization is critical to creating a high quality handbook. As I mentioned above, there should be three main sections in your notebook: Rules, Basic Skills and Team Play/Organization. However, you may create another section if you feel like it is necessary.

Also, consider organizing each section into a format that is easy to understand. Your grade will not only depend on the content of your assignment but also the clarity of your work.

Conclusion

This webquest is not only a way for you to learn about volleyball, but a way to improve your organizational skills and your ability to visualize performance. Think about questions like: What would it be like to coach a team? What skills are necessary for coaching? Do I have to know everything about volleyball to coach the game?

Lastly, be ready to teach the class one drill from your Team Play section. It should be a drill that you could explain and we could complete in six minutes.

Be sure to have fun with this! After all, it's only a game.
